Poems About Friends and Ex-Lovers

Lines to an Old Sweetheart
by Robert Burns

ONCE fondly loved, and still remembered dear,
Sweet early object of my youthful vows,
Accept this mark of friendship, warm, sincere,
Friendship! 'tis all cold duty now allows.
And when you read the simple artless rhymes,
One friendly sigh for him, he asks no more,
Who, distant, burns in flaming torrid climes,
Or haply lies beneath the Atlantic roar.

Interesting Poem.
by: Ivee

Hi Malcolm. Interesting choice of poem. The poet (Robert Burns) makes us think that he's not really over his ex-lover, don't you think?

It sort of makes me wonder if ex-lovers can truly become just friends. Or will the past keep the relationship bittersweet?
