The happy song lyrics makes it sound so easy, doesn't it?
Hard to imagine, but Bob Marley didn't always have an easy life.
Robert Nesta Marley was born in 1945 to a Jamaican mother and a father of English descent. As a result of his mixed origins, he suffered racial prejudice growing up. Although he acknowledged his white ancestry, Marley ultimately came to identify himself as black African. He joined the Rastafari movement and began sporting his trademark dreadlocks.
We know Bob Marley as the foremost performer of reggae music. He was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the reggae bands the Wailers (1964-1974). As well as for Bob Marley & The Wailers (1974–1981).
In his checkered but prolific career, Bob Marley frequently used his music to make a statement. He called attention to the struggle against racial prejudice. And with his inspirational song lyrics and happy song lyrics, he showed his support for his fellow black Africans.
At home in Jamaica, he played in free political concerts. He hoped that his laid back, happy songs would ease the tension between warring political parties. Abroad, he also made appearances to show his opposition to the South African apartheid. As well as his support for Zimbabwe's independence.
It is amazing how despite these issues and a complex personal life, Marley has been able to write such cheerful, cool happy songs.
