I Think So! Issue #006 -- Reading Books: Could It Give You the Edge for Success?
March 30, 2011
Hello,

Reading Books
Can Be the Difference
Between Success and Failure.

Whew! It's almost the end of March, and I nearly missed sending you my newsletter.

No excuse, but I was reading an amazing thriller. I just couldn't put it down.

If you love reading like I do, you'll know what I mean.

In this newsletter, I want to convince you that reading books is not only fun, but it can also give you the edge for success.

In this issue:

1. Inspirational Funnies
2. Inspirational Tip
3. Inspirational News
4. Coming Soon

1. Inspirational Funnies

In case I gave you the wrong impression, I did not spend the whole month reading a book.

I have also been busy finalizing the inspirational book I hope to present to you soon.

Meet Jim. He's the character from my book. Jim can't decide what he likes to do better--read or watch television.

2. Inspirational Tip

Would you like to read a book a week? It's easier than you think.

I'll be the first to admit--I love watching TV. TV is fun. I can happily spend a whole evening glued to it. I especially like detective programs. The ones where the good guys catch the bad guys. They make me feel that world can be put right.

Apart from being entertaining, television can also be informative. If you like educational programs, you can encounter different cultures. Learn to cook. Or gain understanding of nature and animals as though you were in their natural habitat.

However, if you want to improve yourself and your life, reading is better.

I'll tell you why.

Television is passive, while reading is active.

On one hand, television presents the complete experience to you with sound effects, music and full color. No effort required on your part.

Reading, on the other hand, makes you work for it. It forces you to use your mind and imagination. You have to concentrate to be able to visualize and understand the words on the page. They will not jump out and perform for you.

How is this better?

Oh no. I already work so hard all day, I don't want to go home and do some more.

Calm down.

Instead, think of reading as exercise for the mind.

Does this make it sound better?

Reading keeps you sharp and focused. Not only that, it helps with your vocabulary, spelling and grammar. When you read more, you learn to communicate more effectively and eloquently.

These skills are always useful in the workplace.

What if I want to change my life?

Reading can show you the way.

If you want to set up a business, you can read books on how to do it. How about reading a biography of a successful businessman to find out how he achieved his success?

There are millions of books out there, you are almost certain to find one that explains in detail the steps to attain your goals and dreams.

Plus many more motivational and self help books to inspire you.

I'm not saying, Don't watch television.

How about a compromise?

Watch one hour less of TV a night and use that hour to read instead.

By the end of the week (or two, depending on the how long it is), you would have read one book. If you read just one book a week, at the end of the year, that would be 52 books.

Think of how your mind would grow in that year.

And if you read good and useful books, imagine how they could influence your life for the better!

When you find a special book, don't forget to come back and share the book with us.

Does this sound like a reasonable reading plan?

But don't forget to read for fun, too. Books are!

I think so!

3. Inspirational News

Have you heard of Ben Carson?

Not many have. And you would not be hearing about him now if it weren't for reading.

Ben Carson was born in the 50's in a Detroit ghetto. He was raised by a single mother who had to work three jobs just to sustain him and his brother. He failed at school. Got labelled the "class dummy." Until, age 10, his mother made him and his brother turn off the TV and read books borrowed from the library. The irony was, his mother didn't even know how to read!

Reading changed Ben Carson's life.

He became top of his class. Won a full scholarship to Yale University. And is now a practicing pediatric neurosurgeon. His brother did just as well. His brother became an engineer.

Ben Carson would not have made it were it not for reading. He says so himself.

But his story doesn't stop there. Ben Carson not only heals the sick but gives other disadvantaged youths a chance of a better life through his Scholarship Program and Reading Rooms.

If I can't convince you to read, Ben Carson's story will.

Want success? This book will get you started. Check out Bob Proctor's classic, You Were Born Rich.
